ASSOCIATION FOR DEMOCRATIC REFORMS
Unveiling the Truth: The Enduring Quest of Association for Democratic Reforms
In the labyrinth of India’s vibrant democracy, where the echoes of millions of voices vying for attention, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) stands tall as a warrior fighting for transparency and accountability. Founded in 1999 by a group of visionaries from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, ADR emerged from the crucible of a nascent civil society eager to reshape the contours of India’s political landscape.
The genesis of ADR can be traced back to a pivotal moment in India’s judicial history. In 1999, propelled by a deep-seated desire to cleanse the political system, ADR filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) with the Delhi High Court. Their plea? To unveil the veils shrouding the criminal, financial, and educational backgrounds of electoral candidates. Their relentless pursuit bore fruit when the Supreme Court, in landmark judgments of 2002 and 2003, mandated the disclosure of such crucial information by candidates contesting elections.

With this watershed moment, ADR embarked on a mission to democratise information, one election at a time. Their flagship initiative, the Election Watch, became synonymous with meticulous scrutiny and unbiased analysis. From the enthusiastic streets of Gujarat to the zealous hinterlands of West Bengal, ADR’s Election Watches became a clarion call for informed voting. Armed with data-driven reports and a steadfast commitment to ethical governance, they empowered voters to discern the wheat from the chaff, ensuring that the ballot box became a sacred altar of democracy, untainted by corruption and criminality.
But ADR’s vision transcends mere electoral reforms; it aspires to nurture a political ecosystem grounded in integrity and accountability. Through tireless advocacy and strategic litigation, they have challenged the systemic rot plaguing India’s polity. From the corridors of power to the hallowed chambers of the judiciary, ADR’s voice resonates as a potent reminder of the collective aspirations of a nation yearning for a cleaner, more responsive governance.
Their flagship projects, such as Mera Vote Mera Desh (MVMD) and Hum Badlenge Apna Bharat (HBAB), have become cornerstones of their mission. MVMD, a voter awareness campaign, aims to eradicate corruption and criminalization in the political process by empowering the electorate with comprehensive information about contesting candidates and parties. HBAB, on the other hand, focuses on youth engagement and education, fostering informed and independent future voters.
In their relentless pursuit of a more just and equitable democracy, ADR has harnessed the power of technology to amplify their impact. Through platforms like MyNeta and innovative tools like the Election Watch Software (EWS), they have democratised access to information, empowering citizens to hold their elected representatives accountable.

As ADR charts the course for the future, their mission remains steadfast—to cultivate a political culture where transparency is not a mere aspiration but a non-negotiable tenet of governance. With each election cycle, they renew their pledge to uphold the sanctity of the ballot box and champion the cause of ethical governance—a testament to the enduring spirit of democracy that courses through the veins of every Indian citizen.
To further expand their reach and impact, ADR has also ventured into educational programs targeting schools and colleges to instil democratic values and principles among the youth. Through interactive workshops, seminars, and curriculum integration, they aim to foster a generation of informed and engaged citizens who will shape the future of India’s democracy. Additionally, ADR has been actively collaborating with international organisations and civil society groups to share best practices, conduct joint research, and advocate for global democratic standards. Through these initiatives, they are not only strengthening India’s democratic fabric but also contributing to the advancement of democracy worldwide.
