The Inspiring Journey of Prof. Navakanta Bhat

Amidst the vibrant academic atmosphere of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, one figure stands out as a beacon of innovation and dedication: Prof. Navakanta Bhat, Dean of the Division of Interdisciplinary Sciences. His story is not just one of academic achievement but of groundbreaking contributions to healthcare innovation, driven by a passion for making a real difference in the lives of millions.
With a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1996, Prof. Bhat’s journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery. However, his motivation goes beyond accolades; it stems from a deep-seated desire to address pressing healthcare challenges, particularly in underserved communities. Upon his return to India, Prof. Bhat embarked on a mission to translate his knowledge into tangible solutions. Joining IISc as a faculty member, he played a pivotal role in establishing the National Nanofabrication Centre (NNfC), laying the foundation for his groundbreaking work in nanoelectronics and healthcare diagnostics.
Through years of dedicated research, Prof. Bhat’s innovations have revolutionised healthcare diagnostics in India. His pioneering research in Electrochemical Biosensors has led to the development of novel diagnostic solutions for chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Anaemia, and Liver and Kidney diseases. Yet, his vision extends beyond laboratory breakthroughs; it encompasses democratising access to healthcare diagnostics, particularly for marginalised communities.
In 2015, Prof. Bhat co-founded PathShodh Healthcare, a startup dedicated to making healthcare diagnostics accessible to all. Their flagship product, anuPathTM, a Lab-on-Palm device, has emerged as a gamechanger in the field. With over 30 international patents, anuPathTM empowers users with instant and accurate results at point-of-care, bridging the gap between diagnosis and treatment. But Prof. Bhat’s impact goes beyond technological innovation; it reaches deep into society. Through strategic collaborations with organisations like Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) and Human Touch Foundation, PathShodh Healthcare has brought essential healthcare services to remote and tribal communities, where they are needed most.

Prof. Bhat’s tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. His contributions to scientific research and technology innovation have earned him numerous accolades, including recognition as a Fellow of prestigious institutions like IEEE, INAE, IASc, INSA, and NASI. Awards such as the Infosys Prize, Dr. Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship, and IBM Faculty Award have further solidified his reputation as a trailblazer in healthcare technology.
As we reflect on the journey of Prof. Navakanta Bhat, we are reminded that true innovation is not merely about technological advancements; it is about using those advancements to make a meaningful impact on society. Through his pioneering work, Prof. Bhat has not only transformed healthcare diagnostics in India but has also inspired a new generation of innovators to break barriers and create a better world for all.
