Where Learning Meets Liberation:
The Education Revolution by Pratham

In the crowded, vibrant slums of Mumbai during the early 1990s, children played amidst a poignant irony—surrounded by immense energy and boundless potential, yet utterly disconnected from meaningful education. This stark reality deeply moved Madhav Chavan, Farida Lambay, and a small group of social visionaries. Driven by compassion and determination, they imagined a bold new possibility. Thus, in 1995, amidst the bustling lanes and humble dwellings, “Pratham” was born—a name symbolizing their courageous first steps towards transforming millions of young lives through education.

What began under banyan trees and in narrow, cramped rooms soon blossomed into an unprecedented movement. With dawn each day, volunteers, mothers, and local elders gathered to witness something extraordinary—children who were invisible to the formal education system now eagerly learning their alphabets, reading their first words, and solving their first mathematical problems. The spark ignited by Chavan and Lambay’s relentless passion soon spread rapidly, touching rural villages, urban settlements, and remote hamlets nationwide.

Central to Pratham’s groundbreaking success was its “Teaching at the Right Level” (TaRL) approach. Instead of adhering rigidly to grade-level textbooks, Pratham educators carefully assessed each child’s actual learning level, providing tailored, joyful teaching. Within weeks, hesitant learners transformed into confident students, discovering not only knowledge but joy and pride in learning.

Yet, Pratham realized early on that true education was far broader than classrooms. Genuine transformation requires families and communities to embrace and celebrate learning. Thus emerged their powerful “Hamara Gaon” initiative, where entire villages took collective responsibility for their children’s education. Young volunteers led spirited village fairs, learning festivals, and community meetings. Mothers like Anjali from Uttar Pradesh and Sumitra from Maharashtra became leaders -not merely guiding their own children, but shaping educational futures for entire villages.

The impact was astounding. Within two decades, Pratham’s vision radiated across eighteen states, engaging millions of children, mobilizing thousands of volunteers, and empowering countless mothers. Their Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) emerged as a national and international benchmark, shaping education policy and inspiring educational reforms from Ghana and Kenya to Peru and Nepal.

Yet, at its heart, Pratham’s story remains deeply personal. It lives in the transformation of young women like Sunita, who once abandoned education to shoulder household responsibilities but later rediscovered learning through Pratham’s Second Chance program. Thousands like her successfully passed their tenth-grade exams, gained vocational skills, and stepped forward with dignity, confidence, and newfound independence.

Pratham’s enduring success owes much to visionary leaders like Rukmini Banerji, whose passionate, dedicated leadership guided its growth and ensured its unwavering commitment to children, parents, and communities. Today, under the energetic leadership of Dr. Banerji and her dynamic team, Pratham continues expanding, innovating, and deepening its impact.

Pratham’s remarkable journey reminds us that profound societal change emerges from simple, compassionate acts: patiently teaching a child, lovingly empowering a mother, passionately mobilizing a community. Through these enduring actions, Pratham continues illuminating the path to a brighter future, one child, one family, one village at a time.
